Part 1: Information

Ygnacio Valley High School is proud and excited to offer International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme courses. These courses are for 16 to 18 year-olds, taken in the 11th and 12th grades.

IB courses emphasize critical thinking and understanding content from an international as well as local perspective. All IB courses provide a thorough preparation for college-level academics while developing other aspects to being a life-long learner such as community engagement, creative pursuits, and maintaining an active lifestyle.

At YVHS, there are two programs to choose from, each offering different advantages that should meet most students’ academic goals and needs.

DIPLOMA PROGRAMME CANDIDATE (path to International Baccalaureate Diploma)

This is the full IB experience. DP candidates take six IB courses. Generally, three of the courses are Standard Level, while three of the courses are Higher Level. ALL courses are two years long (with the exception of Music and Math Studies). Students receive academic credit for each semester taken, just as regular classes at YV.

Besides the six courses, there is the required DP Core:

  • Theory of Knowledge—a one-year course bridging the 11th and 12th grade. This is a capstone course that unifies the way students understand all content material.
  • CAS—guided reflections on living a balanced life of Creativity, Activity, and Service.
  • Extended Essay—student led, mentor guided research and completion of a final paper on a topic of choice.

Note: The IB Diploma is awarded after graduation when the final results of the external exam are released. Even if students do not earn an IB Diploma, they still graduate from YVHS with a MDUSD diploma upon successful completion of required courses.

COURSE CANDIDATE (no path to IB Diploma)

Students have the option of taking up to three individual IB courses. Students who choose this option will sit side-by-side with Diploma Programme students and will receive a highly challenging, rigorous academic experience.

Note: The IB courses are two-year courses. Opportunity to sit for the final external exam occurs at the end of the second year.

[1] Each campus has varying rules of acceptance of GPA boost. Most important is rigor of course which is designated by it being an IB course.

[2] Similar to an AP course, students must score high enough on the IB exam at the end of the 2-year course. See each college for specifics regarding credit.
