Art and Writing Challenge

Open to all Contra Costa County students: Mt Diablo Peace & Justice Center's Art and Writing Challenge!

Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center's

17th Annual  Dennis Thomas

Nelson Mandela said, "A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of" and Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Through our scientific genius we have made of the world a neighborhood; now through our moral and spiritual genius we must make of it a brotherhood."

Let us consider the ways we can work together to celebrate the diversity of our world.  Mr. Mandela speaks of "community" and Dr. King speaks of "neighborhood" and "brotherhood."   Using your unique, artistic voice, create a visual and/or literary interpretation of diversity, multiculturalism, community, or brotherhood.

Ideas to Consider:

Think about ways of bringing people together.  Remember a time you experienced a new culture, became friends with someone different from you, or challenged a stereotype.

Congressional Art Competition Guidelines

Below is a letter from Congressman George Miller's office.

Dear Student Artists/Teachers,

Congressman Miller invites all High School artists within the 11th Congressional District to consider also participating in the 2014 Congressional Art Competition! If you are interested in submitting your Peace Center art work to the Congressional Competition as well, please complete this waiver form and attach it to the back side of your artwork.

Each entry must be an original concept, design and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws.  Artwork mediums are as follows; oil, acrylics, watercolor, pencil, charcoal, ink, marker, pastels, collage, prints, lithographs, silkscreen, block prints, computer generated art, photography and mixed media. Each piece may be no larger than 28" x 28" x 4" and cannot weigh more than 15 pounds. Artwork does NOT need to be framed for consideration.

Artwork is due in the Concord District Office the week of April 14 and will be judged by an independent panel.  The Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center has made arrangements with this office to accommodate judging schedules for both competitions.  Arrangements for transport of the art submissions between the Center and the Concord office have also been made.

The winner's artwork will be shipped to Washington DC and will hang in the Cannon Tunnel for one year.  The winner and one family member will be flown to Washington DC, courtesy of Southwest Airlines, to participate in the official Congressional Art Competition Reception in June.  As if that wasn't exciting enough-the winner also has the opportunity to compete for an art scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia.  Please contact Adrienne Ursino for specific details,  (925) 602-1880.

As of this time arrangements have not been made to coordinate judging times and transport of art submissions to the remaining Congressional districts in Contra Costa County.  They include the districts of Congressmen Swalwell, McNerney and Thompson.

Those high school art students who wish to participate in both the Peace Center competition and the Congressional competition may need to make other arrangements for transport to those district offices.
